Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry

Profile

The MDS University was established on 1st August 1987 and the Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry saw its inception on 19th April 1994 with Prof. (Dr.) Rita Mehra, present Head of Department as its Founder Member and First Lady Faculty of MDS University Ajmer. Prof. Mehra has twice been given additional charge of Director UGC- Human Resource Development Centre of MDS University Ajmer. With the aim and vision of the University to begin with job-oriented courses, the first Post-Graduate Programme offered by the Department was of M.Sc. Applied Chemistry. Thereafter in 2000, P.G. Programme in M.Sc. Chemistry was commenced. Both the course, earlier run in Annual Scheme are presently run in Semester Scheme of Examination having four semesters in each with M.Sc.Applied Chemistry under Choice Based Credit System. The contents of the courses are based on theoretical and practical aspects in the subject and equip the students with apt knowledge of the subject w.r.t. NET, SET and other competitive examinations as well as for acquiring jobs in the industries. The research thrust areas of the Department at present are Biomonitoring of Metals and Acoustic Studies of Chemical and Biochemical Systems. The published research work in these fields has won international recognition. It is further hoped that the world over the Department might become known as an active Centre for Metal Biomonitoring and Occupational Hazard Assessment researches.

Facilities:
Besides the usual equipments required for such post-graduate programmes in a Chemistry Laboratory, the major instruments in the Department are:

  • The Department is also equipped with safety equipments such as Fire Extinguishers, Eye Wash Station, Fire retarding material to meet with any emergent unfortunate but accidental situations, if any.

Personality Development:
The method used for it is involvement of students in Extra-Curricular Activities. The students translated their ideas in the past by organizing 'CHEMISM' - an Exhibition on Working Models on applications of Chemistry and Applied Chemistry , Co-curricular activity like 'CHEMISTRY of DIVINITY', CHEMICA , QUIMICA, Glimpses of Noble Laureates in Chemistry of around hundred years in 2010. Every year such different opportunities are given to the students . The Department also organized National Seminars on Carbon-13 Spectroscopy , Mass Spectroscopy and 2D NMR Spectroscopy for the academic development of College teachers , Chemists from inside and outside the State in addition to students of the Department.
