Keeping in mind the burning issue of population growth all over the world and especially in India, School of Population Resources Environment and Development (SPREAD) was established, which was the first such department in any of the Universities of Rajasthan to provide education in the area of population studies. Later in the year 1995, the Department of Population Studies got its present form as a separate department. The department is being successfully operated form last 25 years. The Department of Population Studies conducts postgraduate courses in the subject of population studies with a postgraduate degree. Not only in Rajasthan, but also in India, such courses in population studies are being run by only a few well-known universities.

Keeping in view the global and national scenario and expanding the activities of the department Master of Social Work (MSW) course was started as a self-funded course.

The main objective of the Department of Population Studies is to develop the quality of human resources. Priority is given to research and study of various aspects related to population in the department. At present the degree is being offered in two postgraduate courses in the department.
