Established in 1993, the Department has developed into a distinguished academic unit committed to excellence in environmental education, research, and community engagement. It offers comprehensive academic programmes, including M.Sc. and B.Sc. (Hons.) in Environmental Science, a Post-Graduate Diploma in Industrial Safety, Health and Environment (PGDISHE), a Diploma in Basics of Ornithology and a Certificate Course in Birding.

The curriculum is rigorously designed to address contemporary environmental challenges, integrating foundational scientific principles with applied and interdisciplinary perspectives. Emphasis is placed on experiential learning through structured laboratory training, field investigations, and exposure to environmental technologies, enabling students to acquire practical competencies alongside theoretical knowledge.

The Department fosters environmental consciousness by sensitizing students to the sustainable management and conservation of natural resources. In recognition of its academic and outreach contributions, the department was given the status of Centre for Excellence in 2019. The Department actively engages in citizen science initiatives, promoting participatory research and community involvement in biodiversity conservation and environmental monitoring.
